Food has always been how I show love! I suppose it was taught to me at a very young age from my grandmother and my mother. Countless hours/days were spent in the kitchen, side by side, cooking for the family and friends. Food has always brought my family together; there was always a home cooked meal to be shared around the kitchen table (never the TV) and a home baked dessert to finish it off. My memories are surrounded by food and all the love that went into it.
The pies my grandma baked for my grandpa (and my mom’s favourite- her pastry!!), her homemade fudge she would only make at our cottage weekends, the butter tarts my brothers and I would fight over, bring me back to my childhood. My mom and dad work in the kitchen together — dad mastering the bbq while mom tries another new recipe — always playing and trying something new.
My mom taught me to be fearless and creative in the kitchen and my grandmother taught me classics and traditions.
Food (baking in particular) is a way of living for me, whether it’s spending the day at markets, dining at restaurants, discovering new cafés, being in my kitchen or reading cookbooks. It’s something I’m always involved with; it’s who I am! I find so much joy in making people happy with food. There’s nothing more enjoyable than baking for someone who can’t wait to take a bite, or knows you made their favourite dish, or raves about how much they enjoyed what you made. It’s such a simple gift to give someone; your time and your love — shared over food!
